2023-02-16

Gross Regional Product (GRP) of Haikou city, the administrative center of Hainan, is expected to increase by about 10% this year. This was reported by the Hainan Daily newspaper with reference to the target set by the Provincial People's Congress (legislative body).

According to the newspaper, the key development task for Haikou in the coming phase will be to modernize and achieve more intensive growth and improve the socio-cultural atmosphere. The city's GRP is said to be growing steadily and has been at more than 200 billion yuan (about $30 billion) in recent years.

According to the government plan, more than 48 thousand new jobs will be created in Haikou in 2023. The authorities are also implementing a program aimed at increasing the level of welfare. These measures will affect school education and kindergartens.

The authorities intend to speed up work on the expansion of the Meilan International Airport, and the construction of sea and rail infrastructure, bridges, and modern highways to boost trade and regional transportation. Priority areas include the development of advanced pharmaceuticals, the consumer sector, and economic digitalization.

According to the newspaper, 2023 will be an important milestone in the formation of Hainan's offshore free trade port mechanisms. The Haikou administration plans to strengthen the information control system in the logistics sector, improve the efficiency of measures to combat smuggling. The city's customs authorities will be optimized and will work even more closely with Yangpu, a deep-water port in the northwest of the province, which plays a key role in the trade and investment sphere. It is expected that the time to go through procedures related to the inspection and examination of goods at the border will be reduced by more than 10%.

In 2021, Haikou's GRP exceeded 200 billion yuan for the first time, according to official figures. In 2022, the figure was 213.48 billion yuan ($31.32 billion), an increase of 3.7%.
