SANYA, September 28. /TASS/. Yangpu Port in the northwest of Hainan Province has opened a new regular cargo route to Africa. According to the Sansha Weishi TV channel, this is the third such route.

COSCO Shipping will be the operator, the channel reported. Altogether it will be served by two ships with a capacity of 3,500 containers each. The voyages will be performed every two weeks.

Apart from Yangpu, the ships will stop at such Chinese ports as Shanghai, Ningbo, Xiamen, Shekou and Guangzhou. Following the route, they will visit Singapore, Ghana, Nigeria, Benin, Côte d'Ivoire, Sri Lanka and Malaysia. These ships are expected to carry sand, ore and timber from West Africa.

Yangpu Port's containerized cargo turnover from January to August this year reached 1.01 million TEUs (the equivalent of a standard 20-foot container), up more than 35% year on year. Of these, 190 thousand TEUs were transported on foreign trade routes, which is 15% more than during the same period last year. Cargo traffic is carried out on 40 routes, 19 of them - to other countries and regions.

Yangpu is located in Danzhou city (northwest of Hainan), administratively directly subordinate to the provincial authorities. It provides about 45% of the island's foreign trade turnover and about 20% of the foreign investment attracted.

In 2021, the port's total container cargo turnover was 1.3 million TEUs, an increase of 29.33% over 2020. According to the authorities' plans, by 2025, Yangpu should become a regional transport hub: by that time, its cargo turnover should reach 5 million containers a year, and the number of domestic and international routes will exceed 80.
