China's Hainan tripled green car sales target in 2020

2021-01-19

China's Hainan registered 31,200 new green cars last year. As the Hainan Daily reported citing the regional department of industry and informatization, this number exceeded the plan of local authorities to put into operation 10,000 cars running on alternative energy sources by more than three times.

In total, by the end of 2020, there were 62,000 such vehicles on the island, with 73.4% of them in the private use of the province's residents. This region is one of the leaders in the country in promoting eco-friendly transport, the publication specifies. The share of "green" cars among the total number of cars registered on Hainan amounted to 4.2%, which is 2.4 percentage points more than the average indicator in China.

According to preliminary data from the Provincial Department for Development and Reform, 9,600 power stations were set up on Hainan last year, their total number exceeded 21,800, 11,000 of those are intended for public use. The ratio of the number of electric vehicles and charging columns was 2.8 to one. According to the plans of the authorities, by the end of the year this figure should not have exceeded 3:1. By the end of 2020, the island had 916 charging stations for cars and 12 battery replacement points.

In order to combat pollution and protect the environment, the Hainan authorities intend to completely stop selling cars with gasoline and diesel engines on the island by 2030. In order to do so, the government will encourage the population to the purchase electric and hybrid vehicles, increase their use in the public transport system, and develop the necessary infrastructure.

The Chinese authorities are pursuing an active policy of promoting vehicles powered by a hybrid engine, an electric battery or a hydrogen fuel cell. The total number of cars running on alternative energy sources registered in China by the end of 2020 increased by 30% in annual terms and amounted to 4.9 million. Electric cars account for about 81.32% of the total number of such vehicles.
